Addictions: Diseases of Isolation
Heal Addictions, Restore Community
We are designed biochemically to thrive emotionally on heart to heart connection with other people. Human connection releases neuropeptides that make us feel good and make our bodies healthier. Addictions artificially fulfill our biochemical cravings. Even if an addict continues to be social, their experience of human connection is badly distorted and they lose real connection with others. The addict loses out on the most fundamental need we have, human connection. Loved ones are cheated out of their needs for real loving connection to the addict.
The columns that follow are not a complete overview of the subject of addiction, but are the Real Life columns which deal with alcoholism and addiction issues. We hope you find these stories interesting and useful.
